Lieutenant Charles Bonington

Commander of one of the teams that took off from Bagoush airfield, North Africa, in five Bristol Bombay transports on the SAS's first, disastrous operation in November 1941. High winds and poor visability forced the aircraft carrying Bonington's command to make an emergency landing. Later, after taking off and heading back to Tobruk, they were hit by anti aircraft fire and pursued by enemy fighters. The two crew and one SAS man died when the Bombay crash landed; the remainder, including Bonington himself, were captured.
